Ten Truths About the Last Year at College

For those of you, like myself, who are entering their final year of college and preparing to graduate, these are hectic times. Between paperwork for transferring and for graduation, entrance exams for universities, or job hunting for after you receive your diploma, there is so much to think about!

But even though I've had three previous years at this school, and I have a pretty consistent routine, I've noticed some minor things are starting to change. Here are some of the things I have noticed about this year that has been different so far from past years:

We Stress (a little) Less About Being on Time:

Not a whole lot, but now that we've got the school memorized and we know we can get from the Library to the Science building in three minutes, we don't have to stress. Of course this frees our minds up to stress about other things, but hey, at least we don't stress about time anymore!

We Start Putting Our Health before Grades:

When at first we needed to keep our GPA up and our classes in order, now that we have all our ducks in a row and our graduation is more or less guaranteed, our health can be taken into account. Now we can make up for all those late nights, followed by early morning classes, and we can choose water over Starbucks. We have time to cook our own healthier food, instead of deep-fried fast food between lectures. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is what we should be doing from the beginning (but I'll explore that in another series).

We Value Sleep:

When we were once willing to sacrifice our sleep for a test, now we find we can hit the snooze button once or twice before having to get up. Naps (beautiful naps) come back into the picture. Hallelujah! Even though falling asleep on our textbooks doesn't count as osmosis, we can always keep trying.

We Drink Less Coffee:

This may just be me but I've noticed I'm drinking less coffee this semester. Perhaps because I'm valuing my sleep and health more, I'm not certain. But when I used to drink two or three cups of java a day, now I'm getting by on just one. Don't get me wrong, I still love coffee, but my reasons for drinking it seem to have changed this year.

We Pray More:

Between meeting transfer requirements, completing all our courses before graduation, and passing entrance exams, we need a little more Divine intervention. Prayer should be integrated into our routine anyways, but I've found that I've been praying even more, as I'm rushing to complete everything on time. Interestingly enough, it works! Just saying ;)

We Make More Time for Friends:

Friends on campus, friends outside of school, friends in general; when that final semester comes rolling around we find ourselves climbing out of that hole we'd been studying in and seeking companionship. Now, although our schedule is crazy, we take a minute to take that phone call from our bestie, or meet for coffee, and talk about things other than school. Life no longer revolves around classes and homework; it's a liberating realization!

We Don't Worry about Time Management (We've got that Down Pat Now):

Homework assignments, classes, work schedules all of it has become second nature, and we don't have to make a note or set a reminder for everything anymore. Whether we stay organized with online tools (thank you Evernote and Google!) or with an old-fashioned, spiral-bound daily planner, what was once a hectic adjustment is now relatively easy.

We Have More Fun:

Whether it's video games, sports, or some other extra curricular activity, we tend to have the chance to have more fun (or even make time for it). Fun should be a priority, but in this final year we have the opportunity to have more of it, seeing as, hey, we're almost to the finish line!

We Start Thinking about Graduation:

This is probably the biggest one seeing as our final year is geared towards the main goal of walking across the stage and accepting that diploma. But of course it's never that simple, as we have paperwork to fill out, caps and gowns to buy, and classes to complete. All the while keeping that final goal in mind, while we trudge through the required courses.

We Begin Planning for the Future:

Although, this has been something we've probably already been thinking about, now it's more of a reality than ever. The future is looming, and graduation draws closer and closer. We start to put that five year plan into motion and we're seeing the fruits of our labors. It's an exciting (albeit nerve wracking) time. It can also lead to stress, anxiety, insomnia or other more serious emotional struggles. This is why our health becomes important and those prayers need to be as frequent as possible.

Nonetheless, These are just my observations from personal experience, this list may or may not apply to everybody. Are you in your final year and you can relate? Can you think of something to add to the list? If so, feel free to comment below! And as always, good luck with your studies and God bless!

5 Reasons to Stop Stressing

With everyone going back to school now and classes starting I thought I would dedicate this post to all the students out there. No matter what grade you're in, or how old you are, if you're in school right now, then there is one thing that most likely can connect all of us.

Stress

I'm not sure why, but for some reason school can be really stressful! Am I right? Between homework, assignment deadlines, tests, and grade point averages, it can be really overwhelming. On top of all that, it seems we constantly have someplace we have to go or something we have to do. Then life quickly becomes hectic, and we can tend to find ourselves burning out, and stress can come into our lives. When we're under pressure or overwhelmed, and it all just seems like too much.

This is rather sad, because life is so very short. In hindsight, that assignment we're stressing over now might not be a big deal in a week or two, but still we let it steal our joy. It's the trivial things in this world that tend to do that to us. Now, I'm not, in any way, saying that schoolwork is trivial, or that getting a degree isn't important (after all, I'm going to be a teacher myself, so I value schoolwork very highly). But, I'm saying that nothing is going to stick with us, and we cannot learn, if we are too stressed.

The above verse tells us we need to cast all our anxiety (stress) on him (God). Now, sometimes that is definitely easier said than done. But God never tells us to do anything without fully equipping us to do so in the first place. This has been a personal struggle of mine (I do tend to worry more than I should), so I decided to write up a list of five reasons to stop stressing, and decided to share them with you today! Here we go...

The Top 5 Reasons to Stop Stressing:

God has everything under control!

This is important to remember that even when we feel like everything in our lives is falling out of place, God still has the power to make everything alright. He is the Alpha and Omega, and He is the One who can change things for the better. So when life seems unbearably chaotic, remember the One who truly is in control!

You are strong and capable!

It says in Joshua 9:1 that you are strong and 2 Timothy 1:7 that you are capable and of a sound mind. This is scriptural proof that you can handle this! God promises never to give us more than what we can handle, and that we already have the strength to endure. So whatever is coming against you in your day-to-day life, remember these verses and know that you will survive this.

Tomorrow is a new day!

Even if you got a bad grade on a test or assignment, or you made a mistake in class, or said something to someone you shouldn't have, take heart! Remember that tomorrow is always a new day and that God's unending Grace is renewed each and every morning. That means He will give you new opportunities to learn from mistakes, or improve on your previous actions. Things can always be put right.

If it's meant to be, it will be!

If you're waiting on something to happen in your life (a relationship, a test score, an acceptance letter or scholarship, ect.) know that if it's meant to be, it will be. No amount of stressing or worrying can speed up or change anything. So rest in the fact that God already knows the outcome of your situation, and that whatever happens is happening according to His will for you.

You have blessings in store for you!

There are blessings, vast amounts of them, just waiting in store for you. God says in 2 Corinthians 8:9 that He wants to bless you and that He plans on blessing you. So when times seem hard (whether financially or with personal or familial issues, ect.) you can go to Him and say: "Lord, I could really use one of those blessings about now!" because He is just waiting for you to do so.

***

And of course, if all else fails, I invite you to refer back to some important advice from my  favorite Disney animated fish:

So, in the coming weeks, as we settle into the new school year and begin working, as we go to proms and homecoming, extra curricular activities, and standardized tests, think about this list. And when you find those moments of peace, hold onto them and breathe easily. For anyone who may need it, I'll put some resources below for managing stress. Finally, to everyone out there who are studying hard; God bless your efforts!

Love Knows no Distance

DISCLAIMER: this post is going out to every long distance relationship couple who may be laying awake in bed at night thinking about their significant other. Who may be wondering: "Is it still worth it?" Who have either just said goodbye or are looking forward to the next time you'll see each other again.

Army,
Military,
Navy,
Air Force,
College students,
High school sweethearts,
Any couple separated by miles or time zones...

It is the most difficult thing to be in love with someone you can't be with in person every day of your life. It's hard to celebrate the holidays or birthdays, to be with family, to watch new movies or experience new things, and to always have that little part of your heart aching to be with that special someone. Maybe you're wondering:

  • "What are they doing right now?"
  • "When will we get to see each other again?"
  • "Are they thinking of me, too?"
  • Maybe some of you are even wondering: "Will they make it home safely?"

If someone really, truly loves you, distance becomes a hindrance not a deal-breaker. It's hard (very hard) but it can make for a stronger relationship, and it's worth it in the end. It says in the Bible that love always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres:

And according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to 'persevere' is to continue on "in spite of" difficulties. So if you truly love each other, you can overcome the distance.

There are some good things that can come from distance, like stronger communication skills, love letters, and a deeper understanding of your love for one another. With technology, now, our loved ones may just be a text message or a video call away. So, although the days until you see each other again can feel like an eternity, at least technology can bring you a little closer.

I would just like to encourage you, if you're in a long distance relationship right now, to stay strong and keep fighting because any love worth the miles is worth striving for together. Although it's never an easy thing to go through, it's important to remember that being separated is only for a season. After all, true love always finds a way!

Remembrance; a Prayer for the Fallen

Would you please bow your head and say a prayer with me for the victims of 9/11?

*

Lord,
Bless the families of our fallen heroes
and our loved ones who were lost.
Heal the wounds and dry the tears,
which this tragedy inflicted.
Bless the heroes who put their lives on the line
daily for our safety, protection, and freedom.
And bless our nation; help us to continue
standing strong and united.
Even though we have suffered,
 Our future is brighter than
What has happened in the past.
Thank you for bringing comfort and healing,
and leading us into new beginnings.
Amen

 They will never be forgotten;
They're forever in our hearts.

Heeeeeeeey Y'all...

    Wow.

I knew, I hadn't posted in a loooooooooong time but I didn't realize it's been this long. I’m sooooooooooooo sorry!! The last few weeks have been really crazy for me and my family; we've had some complicated things going on, including an unexpected move we had to make right before school was about to start.

So yeah, it's been quite an interesting summer and some of it didn't really go how I had hoped it would. But the Lord has a plan for everything and He has brought some very good things out of these difficult situations.

I'm happy to say that my life is slowly returning to it's regularly scheduled craziness, lol, and now I can start making posts again. I have so many things to share with you!!

Anyways, I've missed you all and I hadn't stopped thinking about you. I can't wait to continue our journey together!!

So I'll talk to you very soon,
 Until then,
Lots of love,
From me :)

A Walk of Inspiration; the Man who Defied the Limits

     So let’s talk about inspiration.
    What is it?
When someone does something amazingly well? Or when something unexplainable happens and changes everybody’s point of view? Things can be inspiring (like a nice piece of artwork) and places (like a Cathedral) but people can be even more inspiring. Acts of kindness, acts of faith, or acts of talent that make history; all of these are inspirational.

Well, Nik Wallenda is one of those inspiring people. He made history Sunday when he completed his high wire walk across the Grand Canyon, and I felt compelled to write about him and his feat because I found it very moving.

Nik comes from seven generations of high wire performers,
So his talent for areal feats is in his genes.
He began training when he was a kid; now that's dedication!
He is truly a master of his craft.

The whole world was watching with bated breath as he defied gravity. He was practically walking on air 1,500 feet above the Little Colorado River Gorge on a cable only 2 inches thick. He faced winds that were over 20 mph, battled the dust and the heat, all without a safety tether or a net to catch him if he fell.

But what amazed me most was his attitude. Before his walk, he gathered with his family and preacher Joel Olsteen to pray. Then, the whole way as he was walking, we could hear Nik praising God and calling out to Jesus; all he wanted was to bring glory to the Lord. When the winds rose and the wire shook, Nik began praising God's name to calm his fears. It reminded me of Peter walking across the water; he did not look at the danger but turned to God instead. It was a magnificent thing to see someone with such great abilities also with such great faith. He put his body and his life into the hands of the One who truly can keep him safe.

It says in Philippians 4:13:
"I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me,
[I am ready for anything and equal to anything,
Through Him Who *infuses inner strength into me;
I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency]."
(amplified version)

Nik's feat was an inspiration. The strength of his faith and the depths of the confidence he has in himself and in Christ is what sets him apart. He proved that if you set your mind to something, you really can do anything.

There are many different kinds of artists. If you have an undying passion for something (whether its computers, writing, painting, dancing, singing, performing, sports... anything!!) and you put 110% of your heart, your soul, and your life into that one thing, then you are an artist. And Nik is definitely an artist.

Click here to relive parts of Nik's amazing walk across the Grand Canyon!!

Learning to Fly

Hey,

    Can I ask you something?
Do you have something that you really, really want to do but something else is holding you back from doing it? Do you have a dream you want to see fulfilled, but there's just something standing in your way? I do, and I know very well how it feels to want something with all my heart but to have fears and doubts keep me from trying.
Maybe we all experience this from time to time; having something hold us back (whether it's pain, fear, doubt or whatever else might hinder us). Maybe we all have this war going in within our minds:

*
What if it goes wrong?
But what if it goes right?
What if I get hurt?
What if it's worth the fight?
What if I make a mistake?
What if you don't?
What if I can't?
How will you ever know if you don't try?
*

I believe that we are each born with a pair of wings, but for many, fear clips our feathers and we can't fly. Whether it's the fear of rejection, of getting hurt (physically or emotionally), of the unknown or trying new things, these fears fuel those "what ifs". They hold us back and they become chains on those wings we've been given to fly.
So, please, let's not build those walls so high we can't climb over them. Let's break the chains. Time is really, really short and we only have today. We can't let another moment pass us by without at least trying to see what we can really do. Think about it:

*
What if the person you really like,
likes you back?
What if that trip you're leery to take,
turns into an amazing adventure?
What if the opportunity you're not sure if you should accept,
will transform your life?
What if that dream you want to chase,
will make you the next Picasso, Tolkien or Astaire?
*

You could be anything you want, but how will you know what you're capable of if you don't step out and try?
We need to take a chance this summer. We need to risk the unknown. We need to throw caution to the wind because life is much too short to put our dreams on a shelf and just let them be, simply because we're scared. Fear is hard to overcome, but it can be done!  How else will we know what we're truly capable of?

Believe in yourself,
Because you deserve to soar.

Hi, I'm a Letter; Go Ahead and Read Me

Hey y'all,

I know, I know, it’s been a loooooooooong while since I’ve posted and I’m sorry for that. This last semester was a little harder than I anticipated it would be. But it’s over and done with and now I’m free to post again and we have a lot of catching up to do!! This summer is going to be absolutely awesome! Let me tell you some of the things I have in mind. Let’s see…

*

Remember last fall when I took my painting class? Well, this previous semester I took a creative writing course (which was awesome!! I had the best time in that class) but we wrote a lot of poetry and short stories. I just can’t wait to share with you this summer all the new pieces I've been working on!

*

Not to mention that I've recently begun writing a novel (which I'm really, really excited about) but we'll talk more about that later this summer.

*

And, of course I have some new artwork to share. I didn’t get to do a lot of drawing or painting last semester so I’m just bursting with new ideas (some of which are pretty "junkyard chic" and have thrifty solutions for creating on a budget).

*

But I have lots and lots more ideas, including new book and movie reviews (speaking of which, has anyone read "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer?)

*

Anyways, this summer is going to be about rediscovering passions. It’s going to be about chilling poolside, making sand castles, getting covered in paint and reading anything we can get our hands on. It's going to be about having fun!! Because that's what summertime is supposed to be about. I don't know about you, but I just can't wait!!!

Dear Readers,

Hey, how are you??? I hope all is well.

I know it's been a long while since I've written... alright, much too long. I'm sorry for that.
How am I? Well, my semester started (which is the main reason I haven't written. If you're also in college then you know how crazy it can get, lol). Ya, it's going well, thanks. My English class is awesome, and painting is a blast, and although Math is still a mountain to be conquered, He says if we have faith we can move mountains (Matthew 17:20) so we'll see... *eye starts twitching.
But I wanted to tell you! I have a new painting that I'll be posting soon!!! Yep, it's an assignment - which is due Monday - but I thought I would also share it here, just for fun, and you can tell me what you think.
Don't worry, even though I'm busier now the good news will still be rolling and I'll still be posting about how wonderful, special and beautiful you are (which is the truth!). It might take me longer to get them together and put them up. So please be patient with me.
Well, I just wanted to say that I love you and miss you and will write soon. Hopefully it won't be too long until we chat again! But watch for that painting and we'll be in touch, I promise. Until then, happy reading y'all!

Sincerely,
Me

There is a Difference

Between being “strong” and having strength
Between looking “hot” and being beautiful
Between acting “brave” and having bravery

Strength will get you through the hardships in life,
It lets you bend under your circumstances without breaking,
And enables you to hold on when all you want to do is give up.

The child fighting leukemia,
is stronger than any war hero or bodybuilder.

Beauty says: “I do not need all this makeup; I’m perfect the way I am.”
It looks in the mirror and sees her personality, her smile, and her heart,
Not the wrinkles, gray hair, or pimples.
It steps on the scale seeking a healthy weight, not size 000.

The woman comfortable in her own skin,
is more beautiful than any runway model.

Bravery is having the nerve to stand up for what you believe in,
It'continuing on despite the odds,
It's trying something even if it seems impossible.

The dreamer who chases his dreams,
No matter what the haters say,
Is braver than the daredevil who pushes the limits.

What do you think?

This is the Time!

This is the time when your dreams are within reach
Free as walking barefoot on the beach
With your toes digging in the sand
Alive, like lovers standing hand-in-hand
When adventure is never planned
And you don't know what waits around the bend
This is when scars and broken hearts can mend
I just can't wait to find it all out

Cause that is what summer is about!
